When Trafalgar Police Officer Dustin Moody suffered life-changing injuries in a 2022 line-of-duty crash, his family’s world changed in an instant.
Dustin was paralyzed in the crash while attempting to stop an impaired driver. In the years since, he has faced an extensive rehabilitation journey and a new reality that requires a wheelchair. For Dustin and his family, even everyday moments—getting to medical appointments, running errands or taking their children out—could become complicated by the limitations of transportation.
But they didn’t have to navigate those challenges alone.
The Central Indiana Police Foundation began working alongside UpLift Johnson County to help raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Moody family. That support was an important first step, but it became something much bigger when additional community partners stepped forward.
Carver Toyota donated a vehicle. BraunAbility provided the equipment and modifications needed to make it fully accessible for Dustin’s power wheelchair. And CIPF and UpLift helped bring the pieces together.
In less than two months, a shared vision became a reality: a vehicle designed not just to transport Dustin, but to give the Moody family greater independence.
The accessible van has made it easier for Dustin to get to medical appointments, spend time with his children and participate in the everyday experiences that so many families take for granted.
For CIPF, this is what partnership looks like.
No single organization could have done all of this alone. It took a network of people and organizations willing to contribute what they could—funding, resources, expertise, equipment and generosity—to create a meaningful solution for a family who had already given so much.
“This has been such a positive experience in such a negative time in our lives,” Dustin’s wife, Emily, shared. “It’s an answer to a prayer.”
Dustin’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community stands behind those who serve. At the Central Indiana Police Foundation, our role goes beyond providing support in a moment of need. We connect people who want to help with opportunities to make a real difference for officers and their families.
Because sometimes support is more than a donation. Sometimes, it becomes a vehicle, a new sense of independence and a little more freedom for a family moving forward.
