Investing in Precision: New Technology Enhances IMPD Crash Investigations

The Central Indiana Police Foundation is proud to announce that a recent grant request from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has been funded through our Invest in Blue Fund—providing critical support for advanced crash scene documentation technology.

The grant will fund the purchase of a Trimble GNSS crash scene documentation unit, a new, compact, and cost-effective system that will dramatically improve the efficiency and accuracy of IMPD’s Crash Investigations Unit.

Modern Technology for Faster, More Accurate Investigations

Currently, IMPD’s Crash Investigations Unit has only one Trimble unit shared among six detectives, requiring them to coordinate access to the equipment whenever a serious crash occurs. This process often causes delays in response time, leading to longer street closures and extended investigation periods.

The addition of another Trimble DA2 GNSS Receiver changes that. This next-generation system enables detectives to measure, document, and map crash scenes more efficiently and with greater precision than manual methods.

The advantages are clear:

  1. Reduced processing time for crash scenes

  2. Increased accuracy in documenting evidence, vehicle positions, and measurements

  3. Improved follow-up capabilities for detectives and prosecutors

  4. Shorter road closures, minimizing disruptions to the community

“CIPF is a valuable partner for IMPD and public safety.  Their generous grant provided our team with an additional important piece of equipment to assist detectives in documenting and measuring very serious crash scenes.  This equipment plays a vital role in the investigations and helps in the arrest and prosecution of reckless drivers who cause these violent crashes.  Thank you CIPF” – Sgt. Allan Whitesell, Crash Investigations | Special Operations Bureau, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department

Powered by the Invest in Blue Fund

This project was made possible through CIPF’s Invest in Blue Fund, which is dedicated to equipping officers with the tools, training, and technology needed to keep our communities safe. The fund supports essential resources—from trauma kits and tactical gear to the latest technology—that directly strengthen public safety across Central Indiana.

By funding this equipment, Invest in Blue donors are helping IMPD’s Crash Investigations Unit respond more efficiently, collect stronger evidence, and serve the public with greater precision and professionalism.
