Invest in Blue: Enhancing Crisis Response in Johnson County
The Central Indiana Police Foundation is proud to support the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office through a recent Invest in Blue grant aimed at strengthening crisis response and improving connections to care for individuals in need.
This grant will equip the Johnson County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) with new Microsoft Surface Pro devices, providing officers with mobile technology to better serve individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions.
Meeting the Moment in Crisis Response
Law enforcement officers are increasingly called to respond to complex situations involving behavioral health challenges. CIT officers play a vital role in these moments—working to stabilize individuals while connecting them to the appropriate services and support systems.
With the addition of Surface Pro devices, officers will now be able to complete documentation, access resources, and coordinate care in real time—directly from the scene. This eliminates delays, reduces the need for follow-up visits, and removes barriers that often prevent individuals from receiving timely help.
Improving Access, Efficiency, and Outcomes
This technology brings several immediate benefits to both officers and the community:
Faster access to resources, including mental health services, shelters, and support organizations
On-scene electronic documentation and release signing, streamlining communication with providers and partner agencies
Stronger collaboration between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and community organizations
Improved outcomes through quicker connections to care and reduced repeat calls for service
As CIT Deputy Shannon Chambers shared:
A Smarter Approach to Public Safety
This investment reflects a growing understanding that effective public safety includes addressing the root causes of crisis situations. By equipping officers with modern tools, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office can prioritize de-escalation, diversion, and long-term stabilization—while still ensuring immediate safety.
