Honoring Deputy Nathan Buchanan: Officer of the Month March 2026
Honoring Deputy Nathan Buchanan – Marion County Sheriff’s Office
The Central Indiana Police Foundation, in proud partnership with Lucas Oil Products, is honored to recognize Deputy Nathan Buchanan as the March 2026 Officer of the Month.
Deputy Buchanan’s nomination reflects the very heart of public service—service that doesn’t end when a shift does.
A Life Saved Off Duty
Recently, after completing his shift, Deputy Buchanan was at home with his family when a neighbor rushed in carrying his two-year-old daughter, who was choking, blue, and unresponsive. Without hesitation, Deputy Buchanan immediately sprang into action.
Relying on his training and instincts, he performed the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge strawberries blocking the child’s airway and transitioned to chest compressions when necessary. His calm, decisive response saved her life. Today, the child is alive and thriving because Deputy Buchanan acted without pause.
Though he was off duty, Deputy Buchanan embodied the true spirit of law enforcement—stepping forward in a moment of crisis simply because someone needed help.
Service Beyond the Badge
Deputy Buchanan’s heroism is matched by his everyday professionalism. He is widely respected as a team player who maintains a positive, professional attitude despite the many challenges facing law enforcement today. He consistently performs his duties with excellence and serves the citizens of Marion County with integrity, dedication, and compassion.
Colleagues describe him as someone who leads through action—steady, reliable, and always willing to do what is right, even when no one is watching.
A Model of Servant Leadership
Deputy Buchanan’s actions remind us that law enforcement officers are guardians not only while on patrol, but wherever they are called to help. His courage in a critical moment, combined with his daily commitment to service, make him a powerful example of servant leadership.
For his quick thinking, lifesaving response, and unwavering dedication to his community, we are proud to honor Deputy Nathan Buchanan as the March 2026 Officer of the Month.
