On May 22, 2026, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jon Samuelson stopped to assist a stranded motorist. The motorist requested a ride to an area hospital which Deputy Samuelson gave him. Shortly after dropping the motorist off at the hospital, Deputy Samuelson received information that the motorist was a violent crime suspect. Deputy Samuelson re-entered the hospital to take the suspect into custody and a struggle ensued. During the struggle Deputy Samuelson was shot three times causing critical injuries. The suspect fled and was later captured. Deputy Samuelson was treated and eventually airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he underwent an eight-hour surgery.
Deputy Samuelson is in recovery and has a long road ahead to rehabilitate from his injuries. All funds received will go directly to Deputy Samuelson and his wife to support them as he heals and rehabilitates.
