Bringing Warmth, Dignity, and Connection to Rehabilitation Center Residents

This past winter, the Martinsville Police Department found a new way to serve their community—not through enforcement or emergency response, but through compassion.

With support from the Central Indiana Police Foundation’s Behind the Line Fund, officers delivered nearly 100 brand-new winter coats to residents of Recovery Works, a local drug rehabilitation facility that’s helping individuals rebuild their lives.

“Our department is always looking for meaningful ways to connect with people in our community beyond the calls for service,” the team shared. “Recovery Works has been doing important work helping individuals get back on their feet. When CIPF offered a generous donation of winter coats, we knew Recovery Works would be the perfect place to make a difference.”

The visit was about more than distributing coats—it was about building relationships and restoring hope.

“Efforts like this remind everyone that our role goes far beyond enforcement—we’re here to serve, support, and stand beside the people in our community,” officers said. “Building trust takes time, and simple gestures of compassion like this help bridge gaps and show that we care about the person, not just the problem.”

One moment that especially touched the officers’ hearts came when a resident tried on his new coat and said it was the first one he’d owned in years.

“Seeing that genuine gratitude, especially from someone working hard to rebuild their life, really brought home what this effort was all about—hope, dignity, and community.”

Through projects like this, the Behind the Line Fund continues to help officers make a difference well beyond their daily duties—reminding us all that true public safety starts with compassion and connection.
